Both are $20 today, and all omelets come with your choice of rice or hashbrowns PLUS pancakes or toast. You can also get cottage cheese, tomatoes, or pineapple in place of the pancakes/toast. Overall, I’m glad we paid Ken’s House of Pancakes a visit.

In my opinion, fried noodles can have onion, cabbage, and maybe bean sprouts. All other vegetables in local-style fried noodles are an abomination. Trips to Hilo often included one or more visits to Ken’s House of Pancakes for brunch, with their tasty omelets, fluffy pancakes, and decadent coconut syrup. It was the perfect start to a day, which would usually include a visit to a black sand beach or adventures in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Ken’s House of Pancakes opened its doors in 1971 under the joint ownership of Ken Pruitt and Bonnie Twitchell.

It’s right on the corner of two main roads so it gets a ton of traffic and is pretty much always busy. If you’re craving a lot of diner food and it’s going to be a late night, this is where tourists or locals alike find themselves. We walked into Ken’s House of Pancakes and instantly felt the small-town diner experience wash over us like the waves in Hilo Bay. Classic coffee cups with Ken’s logo splashed on the side, massive stacks of pancakes, and plates of the loco moco sat on tables full of people enjoying their morning. The large restaurant serves up local food and local culture.
When is Ken's House of Pancakes open?
However, what caught me off-guard (I guess I never noticed as a kid) is that the restaurant is open-air – there’s no a/c here. I suppose this wasn’t as big an issue 30 years ago when our weather was cooler, but it gets pretty hot nowadays, as was the case during our visit. During our conversations leading up to our trip, I learned that, despite being there several times as a kid, Mrs. Island Miler had never been to Ken’s House of Pancakes. It was also the only restaurant in Hilo (at least, in the before times) that was open 24/7 and known throughout the islands for its pancakes and omelets. Nowadays, Ken’s House of Pancakes is still owned by the Ching Family.
There weren’t that many employees around, so it took a while for us to get seated and whatnot despite the restaurant being empty. In contrast to the omelet, the fried noodles were a complete disappointment. While the noodles retained a nice al dente texture, they were quite wet/oily.

The menu for Ken's House of Pancakes may have changed since the last user update. Sirved does not guarantee prices or the availability of menu items. My other complaints with the fried noodles were more personal, with the largest complaint here being the use of green bell peppers. Who the hell puts green pepper in fried noodles?! I also wasn’t a fan of the celery or carrots in here.

With daily specials and warm waitresses, you will feel exactly like you are in a Hawaiian country town. It wasn’t quite as good as I remember, but that could be due to my now different taste and the rose-tinted glasses effect. There are still chunks of snow crab leg meat in there, along with smaller strands of meat, and I like that the omelet, while fully cooked, wasn’t overdone. The green onions provide a nice, light touch of freshness to what is otherwise a decadent omelet. Ken’s House of Pancakes is a dying breed of restaurant – a true old-school diner that hasn’t changed much over the years. It can be pretty jarring if you’ve never been in a place like this.

It became the first, and only 24-hour business on the East-side of the Big Island. Success soon followed the opening, with the appeal of being able to sit down and eat at any time of day or night! Also aiding in the success of the restaurant was the attached Tapa Room Cocktail Lounge, allowing adults to unwind with a tasty cocktail before, during, and after dinner. During Mrs. Island Miler’s inaugural visit to Ken’s House of Pancakes, she went with the Really Real Snow Crab Omelette with rice and pancakes. I wanted to branch out and try something different, opting for the fried noodles. As far as service goes, we went during the after-lunch lull.

Worse, though, is that the entire dish was incredibly salty. The HUGE slices of Spam scattered throughout didn’t help with this. In fact, the primary flavor profiles here were salt and black pepper. Back in those days, I had the extreme privilege of being able to go to Maui or the Big Island at least once a year with my family. When I was a kid, I LOVED going to Ken’s House of Pancakes with my family whenever we visited Hilo. Learning that Mrs. Island Miler has never been, I made it a point to get here during our last trip to the area.
It is still managed by Debra and Ric, and is still pumping out delicious meals including pancakes, burgers, fries, omelets, milkshakes, and other local favorites. It’s the good food, great staff and awesome community that keeps this place going. Ken’s is, was, and will continue to be a mainstay not just in Hilo, but throughout the entire Big Island. If the world has gone digital, why do so many of us still want cookbooks?
During our conversations leading up to our trip, I learned that, despite being there several times as a kid, Mrs. Island Miler had never been to Ken’s House of Pancakes. It was also the only restaurant in Hilo (at least, in the before times) that was open 24/7 and known throughout the islands for its pancakes and omelets. Chef and farmer Mollie Engelhart, after specializing in serving vegan food at her Sage Vegan Bistro locations, made the risky decision to change the orientation of her restaurants in the name of regenerative agriculture. As Stephanie Breijo reported this week, she is renaming her restaurants Sage Regenerative Kitchen & Brewery and will add some meat dishes to the menu from animals raised using regenerative farming practices.

Food memoirs and cookbooks are consistently among the strongest areas of the book industry. Our signature items include the Apple Pancake, a single large pancake smothered with sautéed apples and cinnamon sugar baked to perfection, to create a deliciously rich cinnamon sugar glaze. In contrast to the omelet, the fried noodles were a complete disappointment. While the noodles retained a nice al dente texture, they were quite wet/oily. Worse, though, is that the entire dish was incredibly salty. The HUGE slices of Spam scattered throughout didn’t help with this.

However, there are more exciting options in Hilo nowadays, so I wouldn’t automatically return here. But I wouldn’t rule out a return visit, either. I’d probably stick with the omelets and pancakes if I do come back, though. It wasn’t quite as good as I remember, but that could be due to my now different taste and the rose-tinted glasses effect. With new bosses came fresh modifications to an already booming industry. The Chings decided to convert the Tapa Room to incorporate more seating for diners. They also put a new roof on the building and increased the menu dramatically. Eventually, the Ken’s logo, and the roof and road signs also got a modernized update. In 1990, there were discussions of the possibility of putting the well-known eatery up for sale.
When I was a kid, my standard order at Ken’s House of Pancakes was the Really Real Snow Crab Omelette (snow crab, green onions, hollandaise) or the Da Braddah Omelette (bacon, ham, Portuguese sausage, green onions, and cheese). Both are $20 today, and all omelets come with your choice of rice or hashbrowns PLUS pancakes or toast. You can also get cottage cheese, tomatoes, or pineapple in place of the pancakes/toast. The green onions provide a nice, light touch of freshness to what is otherwise a decadent omelet. I asked Veggiekins website founder Remy Morimoto Park for one of her go-to recipes from her book “Sesame, Soy, Spice” and she named the scallion pesto. The more I learned about traditional poke style, the more eager I was to immerse myself in this ancient dish that I have so much respect and admiration for. There are so many restaurants on 2nd Street in Long Beach. However, I drove by last summer and I remember seeing a huge line for Poke Pola, which is smack dab in the middle of 2nd Street. But since they didn’t do poke Hawaiian-style, I completely overlooked it. Then one Sunday when I happened to be in the area craving poke, instead of heading over to Hawaiian-poke joints in Long Beach like Poke More, I went ahead and finally tried Poke Pola. This casual, Hawaiian-approved restaurant sits on a strip mall on Crenshaw Blvd in Torrance.

Besides poke, Auntie’s Maile’s is one of the few places in LA that serves authentic Hawaiian food. You will know because most regulars that frequent this place usually get a Hawaiian dish. The poke, which they serve by the pound, has been approved multiple times by Hawaiians.
My extensive search for the best poke bowls doesn’t stop in LA County. I also included places in Orange County and San Diego County. As my search for Hawaiian-style poke joints in Southern California deepened, I kept coming across more places that were the perfect excuse to go on a jaunt. I was scrolling through Instagram and saw this picture of a sushi burrito, I immediately looked at restaurant location and to my delight it was close to my house. I went today restaurant is nicely decorated clean and organized.
Even before opening time there will be a line, which is why I can’t emphasize enough to get there as early as you can. The fish at Ali’i Fish Company is shipped overnight DAILY from HAWAII! When I visited this place, the owner was in the front making sure everything was running swimmingly. Living in Southern California comes with the perks of having a plethora of poke places to choose from.
However, after my two trips to Hawaii where I ate poke almost every day of my stay there, I wouldn’t go back to the time where I was a poke newbie. When I think of my experience in Hawaii, and the unforgettable fresh poke bowls I had after a morning on the beach, I relish in nostalgia. The pristine quality of the fish and the impeccable seasonings would make any poke lover’s dreams come true. If you want to read more about my experiences in Hawaii and the amazing poke joints I went to, check out my Maui and Oahu food guide. They’re very unassuming and the seating is extremely limited, many times non-existent, which is why my dad and I always devoured our poke bowls in our rental Jeep. After being in North Hollywood for two years, in July 2020, Poke Motto opened up their new location in Tarzana!

It was my first time so it is a little overwhelming to order but the employees were awesome they walked me through ordering. I had a lunch bowl so much food it actually is enough for two people, everything we ordered was amazing and fresh. I will definitely be back this may become my favorite place.
People that go to Auntie’s don’t usually go for the poke, but for the Hawaiian dishes that are a home away from Hawaii. The poke is definitely one of the best you will find in LA and is made with sushi-grade fish, which you can either buy it by the pound or as a full bowl. If you want to try out something other than poke, I highly recommend their salmon teriyaki bowl, which is $9. It includes perfectly cooked rice and a generous portion of crispy salmon.
Moreover, since poke is also deeply rooted in Japanese cuisine, you will find a few places here that serve poke bowls Japanese style. Poke (pronounced poh-keh) is a traditional Hawaiian meal that features cubed raw fish. At House of Poke, customers can also get cooked chicken, beef, shrimp tempura (a fan favorite, Slaugh said), or salmon filets.
Typical forms are aku (an oily tuna) and he'e (octopus). Increasingly popular ahi poké is generally made with yellowfin tuna. Adaptations may feature raw salmon or various shellfish as a main ingredient served raw with the common "poké" seasonings. The traditional Hawaiian poké consists of fish that has been gutted, skinned, and deboned. It is sliced across the backbone as fillet, then served with traditional condiments such as sea salt, candlenut, seaweed, and limu. Another impetus that led me to write about poke is that most LA poke guides on Google are at least four years old.
If I could eat just one thing for the rest of my life, it would be Poke. This Hawaiian dish has been served for centuries but it reached its popularity on the mainland in 2015. That year, the poke trend was at its full peak in Southern California and became a huge Instagram food sensation. Coincidentally, I moved here in 2015 and throughout the following years, I have seen poke joints pop up in almost every LA neighborhood like cold pressed juice bars. Immerse yourself in the pure, unadulterated bliss of our Salmon poke.
I am stunned by the fact that by searching “The Best Poke in Orange County” on Google, only one blog so far mentions Kawamata. Opening a new restaurant, especially one as specialized as a poke shop, has had its challenges. Most of the House of Poke bowls range in price from $15 to $20. “I think that it’s just amazing that we’re able to offer it at the price we can,” Slaugh said.

The storm hitting during opening weekend added an extra challenge, as it was impossible to know in advance what the demand would be for certain food items, Slaugh said. Using raw fish and fresh vegetables means the ingredients of the poke bowls do not last long, and supplies need to be constantly refreshed, making it even more difficult to manage a delay. The menu is split between the Chef’s menu, which you cannot modify because these are made with his special recipe, and the build-your-own option. If you’re having doubts, you can ask him questions and let him know your sauce and fish preferences. If you’re the kind of person who likes onions but prefers not to have stinky onion breath for the rest of the day, their special crispy onions won’t linger in your mouth afterwards.

Sang told me that they are looking to expand Poke Motto into more locations in the San Fernando Valley. If you’re reading this and you don’t know about poke, the poke you will find at most places in the US is served so that the customer can mix and match different bases, toppings and sauces. In other words, they are as customizable as a Chipotle bowl or a Subway sandwich. With the exception of two places, this list features dedicated poke joints that will let you appreciate and savor the authenticity of this Hawaiian culinary dish. It is believed that poke was first prepared by native Polynesians.

I did a very thorough review of Bear Flag in my post “The best restaurants and Coffee shops in Orange County”. I ordered their poke salmon to-go from their Newport Beach location and the quality of the fish was beyond my expectations. For every strip mall in Orange County, there is at least one poke bar. An indicator that a place is good is when you can see the fresh fish on display, and that’s one of the main reasons Bear Flag won me over. On top of that, they have a marketplace where you can buy pre-made sushi or fish to cook later at home.

Each item had its own distinctive seasoning so eating them one after the other, made my taste buds explode with flavor. The sauces are the star of the show, so ask him questions if you’re curious! Bear Flag is the best poke place in the Newport Beach area. It isn’t a hole-in-the-wall type of place like Kawamata, but it is the second best option for poke in Orange County. The salmon was pure freshness and the sauce was deliciously tangy. The onions had the perfect crispiness and did not overpower the rest of the ingredients.
Kawamata Seafood is on the San Diego County borderline and offers the BEST poke in Orange County. To make a withdrawal you will need to pass the KYC procedure. After that withdrawal requests are processed within 48 hours. It will also take some take for the payment system to execute the request, so you will receive cash within 7 days, but generally, it happens much faster. We have a pretty extensive list of no-go areas, beginning with ‘leaving the house’ and ‘talking to other people’, that sort of thing. While starting the business has had its challenges, since it opened, the shop has been flooded with customers.
Slaugh is relatively new to the restaurant business, though she has worked in the industry before. Woolsey carries most of the experience, following years of running the Ekahi Grill food truck and working as a chef. Still, the transition from chef to owner is new to him. When I walked in, the first thing that struck me was how the employee was grinding the lettuce, which is always a great sign that the ingredients are fresh.
House of Poke is located at 500 Red Table Drive in Gypsum. The shop is open every day except Monday from 11 a.m. Customers have been giving positive feedback thus far, according to Slaugh.
Whatever you get there, rest assured that you will be in good hands — don’t be afraid to ask questions. In addition to their delicious poke bowls, their house-made sauces are incredibly flavorful and light — they even have black rice as your choice of base! The North Hollywood location is also the first poke joint that features a sushi bar!
The poke bowls are built on a bed of rice or greens, and topped with fresh vegetables, fruit, protein, sauce, and other tasty features. Toppings at House of Poke include edamame, pineapple, seaweed salad, chickpeas, carrots, onions, and more, with new toppings coming in on a rotating basis. In Japan, a similar dish called “sashimi salad” or “sashimi bowl” has been enjoyed for centuries, showcasing fresh fish slices served over rice or salad greens. While not identical to Hawaiian poke, the Japanese influence on seafood preparation has undoubtedly contributed to the popularity and evolution of poke bowls worldwide. From trendy restaurants in New York City to beachside cafes in Australia, poke has become a global sensation. Hands-down, my all-time favorite poke style is their California roll.

"UCLA has a long history of peaceful protest and we are heartbroken to report that today, some physical altercations broke out among demonstrators on Royce Quad," Mary Osako, vice chancellor of UCLA Strategic Communications said. The student protests -- some of which have turned into around-the-clock encampments -- have erupted throughout the nation following arrests and student removals at Columbia University in New York City. Students at schools including Yale University, New York University, Harvard University, University of Texas at Austin, University of Southern California and more have launched protests. Legal challenges could extend that timeline even further.

TikTok has denied assertions that it could be used as a tool of the Chinese government and has said it has not shared U.S. user data with Chinese authorities. The bill’s quick path through Congress is extraordinary because it targets one company and because Congress has taken a hands-off approach to tech regulation for decades. Lawmakers had failed to act despite efforts to protect children online, safeguard users’ privacy and make companies more liable for content posted on their platforms, among other measures. But the TikTok ban reflects widespread concerns from lawmakers about China. "There is no truth to claims of an impending lockdown or evictions on campus," Columbia University said in a memo to students Saturday evening. The University of Southern California closed its main campus Saturday evening "due to a disturbance," the university said on X.

Since mid-March, TikTok has spent $5 million on TV ads opposing the legislation, according to AdImpact, an advertising tracking firm. The ads have included a diverse group of content creators, including a nun, extolling the positive impacts of the platform on their lives and arguing a ban would trample on the 1st Amendment. The company has also encouraged its users to contact Congress, and some lawmakers have received profanity-laced calls.

"We absolutely condemn the antisemitism language that we've heard of late, and we certainly condemn all the hate speech and the threats of violence out there. These protests, we understand they're important, but they do need to be peaceful," he said. Addressing the physical altercations during the protests, Osako said, "We are dismayed that certain individuals instead chose to jeopardize the physical safety of the community." In 2020, federal courts blocked an executive order issued by then-President Trump to ban TikTok after the company sued on the grounds that the order violated free speech and due process rights. His administration brokered a deal that would have had U.S. corporations Oracle and Walmart take a large stake in TikTok. The sale never went through for a number of reasons; one was China, which imposed stricter export controls on its technology providers. Members of both parties, along with intelligence officials, have worried that Chinese authorities could force ByteDance to hand over American user data or direct the company to suppress or boost TikTok content favorable to its interests.

The company has indicated that it would likely go to court to try to block the law if it passes, arguing it would deprive the app’s millions of users of their 1st Amendment rights. The House has passed legislation that would ban TikTok in the United States if the popular social media platform’s China-based owner doesn’t sell its stake within a year, but don’t expect the app to go away any time soon. Los Angeles Police Department issued a citywide tactical alert due to a protest on USC's campus, urging people to avoid the area. The company has good reason to think a legal challenge could be successful, having seen some success in previous legal fights over its operations in the U.S. In November, a federal judge blocked a Montana law that would ban TikTok use across the state after the company and five content creators who use the platform sued. TikTok has lobbied hard against the legislation, pushing the app’s 170 million U.S. users — many of whom are young — to call Congress and voice opposition. But the ferocity of the pushback angered lawmakers on Capitol Hill, where there is broad concern about Chinese threats to the U.S. and where few members use the platform themselves. "We'll leave it to local authorities to determine how these protests are managed," Kirby told Stephanopoulos, "but we want them to be peaceful protests and obviously we don't want to see anybody hurt in the process of peacefully protesting."
Texas’ ban was challenged last year by the Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University, which argued in a lawsuit that the policy was impeding academic freedom because it extended to public universities. Dozens of states and the federal government have put in place TikTok bans on government devices.

Texas’ ban was challenged last year by the Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University, which argued in a lawsuit that the policy was impeding academic freedom because it extended to public universities. Our unique twisted farm food and Midwest-inspired dishes with a modern twist.
Gift the Hash House Experience

Labor and material costs tend to ramp up with demand throughout the year, and they come back down as demand cools. These seasonal trends can vary from region to region depending on climate, but in most areas of the U.S., summer is the most popular time for remodels and other home improvement projects. This means you’ll likely pay more to install your siding in summer and late spring than in fall or winter. Like wood, brick siding gives a home timeless appeal and greatly increases its value. It also provides exceptional insulation, improving its energy efficiency. Brick’s strength makes it remarkably impact-resistant, and it can withstand weather, fire, and insects better than most other materials.

Additionally, embracing the diverse culture and exploring different parts of the city can lead to discovering hidden gems and building a connection to the community. It’s heavy, rot- and weather-resistant, holds up well in extreme conditions, and it’s nonflammable. Fiber cement is easy to paint, so it’s a great option for those who prefer a painted finish to a natural or manufactured finish. The process of installing or replacing the siding on a home is surprisingly quick—often far less time than the homeowner will take to make the decisions about design choices and contractors. The following are some of the most common questions that are asked at the beginning of the process. For a 2000-square-foot, the average installation home ranges from $4,000 to $14,000, depending on the details of your installation job.
You can choose between hand-split shakes, which are irregularly shaped and rustic-looking, or cedar shakes that look more natural. Below, we’ve outlined the basic steps of siding installation to give you an idea of what this project requires. Because different siding types require different maintenance, you should defer to your product’s packaging or your installer’s instructions where they conflict with the care steps listed here. Of course, not every home is perfectly rectangular like the one in this example. Many homes have structural features like gables, dormers, and add-ons, the surfaces of which need to be accounted for in sizing estimates. This means that the more complex your home’s shape, the more you’re likely to pay for siding.
Small roofing and home improvement projects may go on without a building permit, but larger DIY projects require an examination. Not many siding experts have the skillset to replace a roof, so you’ll need to hire another professional. After installing engineered wood, you only to wash it once a year with a power washer. The chemical compounds in engineered wood help withstand mold, rot, and prevent insects. Engineered wood is made up of plywood or hardwood sheets that contain bits of wood bonded together with resins, then treated with insecticide and fungicide.

Fiber cement is made from a mixture of ingredients like cement, sand, and plant fibers, so it’s incredibly durable and holds up well in heat and extreme weather. Additionally, this material’s durability makes it very low maintenance. James Hardie’s Hardie® board siding is one of the most popular fiber cement siding options.

Different materials have different labor costs because of the different kinds of knowledge and skill that are required to successfully install each type of siding. The cost of labour per foot per material can be easily calculated. Wood, brick, and stucco are traditional materials used to protect and enclose a home; in recent years, fiber cement, aluminum, composite, and vinyl have been added to the list. Each type has its own style and maintenance needs, and those features are balanced against the cost. In many cases, vinyl siding comes out on the top of this equation. For homeowners who wany the look of a log house but aren’t interested in the expense or upkeep, vinyl log siding could be their ideal choice.
However, the specific lifespan of siding depends on its materials. A durable siding can keep your house away from the damages caused by weather changes or other extreme conditions like hurricanes or tornadoes. In addition, it keeps the entire structure sturdy along with the primary foundations.
Fiber Cement Siding 101: What to Know About Cost, Maintenance, and More
On the other hand, it tends to warp or crack in extreme heat, so it’s not used or stocked as often in southern states. Next, use the simple mathematical formula for calculating square footage. It is recommended you have an idea of what you want in terms of siding combinations and a budget to account for all expenses (expected and unexpected). For example, if the old siding could have undetected water damage and placing new siding on top could potentially collapse the entire structure in the future. Likewise, wood rot can happen without knowing it, as the old siding is hidden completely.

Shutters can help define the home’s style and add to the cost, depending on whether they’re wood or vinyl. Vinyl shutters cost $25 to $450 per pair, with an installation cost of $260 to $400. The cost to redo a house exterior can vary depending on the extent of the renovation and the specific elements involved. If re-siding the house is a part of the larger remodeling project, the cost will depend on the overall scope and complexity of the renovation.

How to Calculate Siding Costs Near You
"[E]levated mortgage rates and high home prices have been keeping some buyers on the sidelines this spring," Bright MLS Chief Economist Lisa Sturtevant said in an email. That may also mean the cost of buying a home is at a historic high, although property buyers in the 1980s dealt with mortgage rates that were significantly higher than today's loans. Mortgage rates reached a peak of 18.6% in October 1981, although home prices were considerably lower, even on an inflation-adjusted basis, than today's values. According to MIT calculations, Los Angeles’ living wage is around $22.89 for a full-time employed individual. The calculations do not include extra expenses like vacations, eating out, or entertainment.
Aluminum is also more difficult to repair; as it fades and gains a chalky appearance, problem areas can’t simply be replaced with new sections of siding, as the colors will be wildly different. Depending on your preference and budget for home siding, these siding types are all great options for your home. Use our home siding cost calculator to get an estimate on what your total costs will be. As we mentioned above, roughly 50% of your project total will go to labor costs. These can vary by city, with higher cost of living areas having higher labor rates.
Is it Worth Residing My House?
Some siding manufacturers will actually void the warranty of their product if you install it over the old siding and not just directly to a good quality OSB. Yes, in some circumstances you can opt to cover your old siding with new ones and use it as a substrate. But you can only do this if the existing siding is in good condition, free of wear or any critical damages. However, the issue with these natural sidings is that they can be significantly expensive.

How Much Does Vinyl Siding Cost to Install? (2024 Data)
Talk to your contractor about what siding types are appropriate for your newly constructed home, as certain materials place a strain on foundations. It costs $1,000 to $3,000, or $0.25 to $0.75 per square foot, to remove old siding. In most cases, you must remove old siding before adding a new layer. This allows you to inspect the cladding, looking for imperfections that could shorten the lifespan of the siding. However, some homeowners install vinyl or metal siding directly over previously installed wood siding.

Unfortunately, stone is usually the most expensive siding material. On average, stone veneer siding costs a whopping $33 to $59 per square foot. This means that siding an entire home with the material typically costs $48,935 to $89,035, making it an unrealistic option for many homeowners. The overall cost of siding installation and replacement depends on many factors.
Vinyl siding increases home value by boosting the home’s curb appeal in the eyes of potential buyers. Expect to yield up to an 80% rate of return on your investment in new vinyl siding for your home, especially if you plan on selling your home soon after the siding is replaced. New siding can also reduce a home’s energy bills, making it even more valuable over time.
Types of siding that advertise themselves as fade-resistant may hold on longer than others, but eventually the sun’s rays will dull the color or change it completely. In addition, rust stains can appear on siding as hardware gives in to exposure to water. At first, fading may not be a big deal as long as it’s uniform, but eventually the fading means that the material is destabilizing and repairs will be nearly impossible. However, even an easy material like vinyl needs careful attention to be installed properly. Every nail or screw you put into your siding creates a possible entry for rain and moisture to make its way inside.
You can expect to spend an average of about $4 to $8 per square foot if you choose a metal siding. But aside from aesthetics, stone sidings are also effective in protecting your home from any damage caused by the weather. However, one huge downside of wood is that it needs high maintenance as it is prone to water and weather damages. Moreover, adding new siding improves the house’s aesthetics, making it more appealing to potential homeowners if you are trying to sell your house.
The primary drawback to stucco is that its installation requires a skilled and knowledgeable artisan; poorly installed stucco will crack and chip almost immediately and will look shabby. Because stucco isn’t common in all areas of the country, finding a skilled installer may be difficult—and expensive. Thess cost factors are fairly straightforward; the more house there is to cover, the higher the cost to replace siding on house surfaces.
Cedar and redwood are also great options since they naturally contain rot resistance. The added upfront cost, though, could save you money down the road by preventing termite and other insect damage along with water damage. This is due largely to variations in climate making certain siding materials more popular and viable in different areas. For example, vinyl is more affordable in colder states where it can withstand year-round temperature shifts. In hotter states where it tends to warp or crack in extreme heat, it can be harder to find and costlier as a result.
Always remember to consider labor fees as well as any additional expenses like permits and disposal of old siding. If you wonder how much does it cost to reside a house, the cost can vary. The average cost to reside a house is between $2.00 to $50.00 per square foot depending on the type of siding material you choose, as well as supply fluctuations.
However, how speedy her marriage was is exactly what happened in real life. Per the British royal family's website, Charlotte departed for Britain on August 17, 1761. After a lengthy and perilous journey by sea, she arrived in London on September 8. When British porphyria expert Dr. Timothy Peters reviewed Macalpine and Hunter’s archival work, he found that they were quite selective in their reporting and interpretation of George’s signs.

A poor diagnosis is especially difficult to disprove, especially when it becomes part of popular “historical” accounts. But the porphyria-bipolar arguments demonstrate one of the greatest problems when diagnosing those who died 200 years ago and without the physical evidence to back up such claims. It should be noted that George III was considered a fair and decent monarch during his healthy periods. He had a great appetite for knowledge and books, and was the first king to study science, even if popular opinion and fictional accounts have made him out to be a debilitated fop. Golda Rosheuvel told Insider in 2020 that the writers of "Bridgerton" season one didn't narrow down a diagnosis either.
The publication notes that Charlotte brought two Pomeranians, Phoebe, and Mercury, with her when she first sailed to the UK and eventually gifted others she bred to her royal relatives. After their wedding in the show, Charlotte and George's relationship takes a turn for the worst. Amid the tension and physical separation, with George living at one royal residence and Charlotte at another, he sends her a gesture in the form of a Pomeranian puppy, which she calls a "deformed bunny."
What is wrong with King George III in Queen Charlotte?
On one occasion in 1778, he was restrained with a straitjacket after becoming aggressive. On another occasion, he began foaming at the mouth and speaking incoherently for hours on end. At one point, rumours surfaced that he'd tried to shake hands with a tree after mistaking it for the King of Prussia, thereby earning the nickname 'The Mad King'. So, if you're wondering what illness King George suffered from in real life, read on for everything you need to know from his beginnings to the illness that plagued him and Queen Charlotte. While "Queen Charlotte" never explains what exactly is wrong with King George, it appears to be following the mental illness theory with the way the series presents the monarch, who only hallucinates when he is nervous and under a significant amount of pressure.

Queen Charlotte A Bridgerton Story: How did King George III die?.
King Charles delighted royal watchers when he resumed public-facing duties alongside his wife Queen Camilla on Tuesday. Do you have a question about King Charles III, William and Kate, Meghan and Harry, or their family that you would like our experienced royal correspondents to answer? The image showed the princess seated on the arm of a chair, with Prince Louis on the other side and Prince George behind, framing Kate in the center. The photo took on increased significance as it was the first to be released of Kate following her abdominal surgery in January. Afterward, the princess met with members of the public during a brief walkabout taken part in annually by the royals. Charlotte joined her family for Princess Kate's annual "Together at Christmas" community carol concert at Westminster Abbey on December 8, 2023.
While men gave the final approval for proposals, the women did very much work behind the scenes to make these matches happen, which is shown in the show. The real Queen Charlotte was also known for her matchmaking, Peplar said. In the 1780s, she and the king began hosting an annual ball to introduce eligible young women to the monarchs and kick off the social season.
What is Wrong With King George in Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story?
Episode four of "Queen Charlotte" reveals that the king is suffering from some sort of mental health disorder, causing him to black out and hallucinate. Due to the act, George III’s oldest son George, Prince of Wales, became appointed prince regent until his father died in 1820. Martin Warren is a professor of Biochemistry at the University of Kent in Canterbury, England, who has researched and written about George III’s mental state for years.
True: Charlotte and George met for the first time in a garden.
Even by the Regency era, this would have been wildly unrealistic; while slavery was abolished in the British Empire in 1807, slaves weren’t fully free in the British colonies until 1838 and its repercussions are still felt to this day. But while these important themes help to make the show a captivating and thought-provoking watch, there’s definitely a liberal blurring of the lines between history and fantasy in the series. From the late 1780s until his death in 1820, George’s mental state slipped in and out of progressively worse states, culminating in his eldest son taking over as Prince Regent. George begins to have one of his fits in front of Princess Augusta and Parliament. His mother brings a set of doctors together to figure out how to treat George.
The real answers may be lost to history, but there are a few theories. It remains to be seen if A Bridgerton Story will focus much, if at all, on the sharp decline in the royal couple’s physical health and relationship. In any case, these troubling final decades weren’t indicative of the amicable partnership the pair led for years.
Previous academic texts have suggested the monarch suffered from porphyria, a theory that held weight for several decades. However, more recent studies, including one from St. George's, University of London claimed that porphyria theory was "dead in the water", and instead insisted George had suffered from a psychiatric illness. A major thread across the season is the health of King George, who is seen suffering from a mixture of symptoms that will leave audiences at home guessing about what exactly is wrong with the King.
With “Queen Charlotte,” the curtain is finally pulled back, and younger versions of Queen Charlotte (India Amarteifio) and George III (Corey Mylchreest) step to the fore. The spinoff dives into the circumstances of the monarch to reveal his long-debated — never officially — diagnosed mental illness and the effect it had on the young royals’ marriage and roles. In real life, Queen Charlotte and King George III did have a large family. The couple had fifteen children during their six-decade marriage, thirteen of whom lived to adulthood (both Prince Octavius and Prince Alfred died in childhood).

For some old-school purists, eliminating the long walk borders on sacrilege, said Will Cockrell, a journalist whose recent book, “Everest, Inc.,” explores the evolution of commercial guiding on the mountain. “They’ll say, ‘You’re not a real climber; you’re not a real nature lover,’” Cockrell said. It goes without saying that the luxury of acclimatizing at home, in bed, with your partner curled up beside you, represents a profound break from the usual manner of preparing to ascend what is still one of the world’s deadliest mountains. Cooper, who used one of the enormous old tents preparing for a 2015 trip to climb the highest peaks in Antarctica and South America, confessed he had no luck sweet-talking Hilary, his wife of 28 years, into sharing the adventure. You have to spend a few months before the trip with your head in the bag. Cooper, 54, an Oakland biotech executive who has handled finance for a number of companies, including one that sold for $7 billion, isn’t a masochist, exactly. He’s acclimatizing, in the bedroom of his second home near Lake Tahoe, for an attempt to climb Mt. Everest in May. At Tibetan Treasures, our mission is to provide authentic, high-quality Dharma items from around the world that support your spiritual practice. Reports from both New Zealand and the United States show that not only is participation in the arts not waning, there is a large population that holds an interest in engaging with the arts.
Cooper has competed in the Ironman World Championship in Hawaii 11 times and has won the legendary Western States Endurance Run, a 100-mile ultra-marathon. “I’m feeling ready and anxious to get going,” he texted a reporter last week. His company, Alpenglow Expeditions, charges $165,000 (before tip) for a private climb, meaning one professionally certified guide per client, and $98,000 for a group climb with three clients per guide. That suits his clients, who “tend to be pretty type A, pretty high performing in everything they do,” Ballinger said.
He was ready to climb Everest four years ago, but when China shut down expeditions to its side of the mountain in 2020 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Ballinger stuck to his principles and refused to resume climbing with the crowds in Nepal. This is the first year since the pandemic that the Chinese side has been open. Anyone who has even loosely followed events on Mt. Everest in recent years is probably familiar with the terrifying “conga line” photos of climbers stuck in the world’s highest traffic jam.

On the left, Rep. Mark Pocan, D-Wis., expressed concern over Israel’s conduct of the war under the Netanyahu government. “If he’s not listening to us on matters of international security, how can he be trusted with more offensive weapons? Under the rule for floor debate, there were no amendments allowed on the Israel aid bill. The Alpenglow team, which includes 26 clients, guides and Sherpas hoping to reach the summit, were originally scheduled to begin their expedition in late April. After a late permitting change from the Chinese government, that date has been pushed back to May 7.
Last year, the deadliest climbing season in Everest history, three Sherpas were killed in the Khumbu when a towering block of ice collapsed and buried them. From there, climbers begin a long, deliberately slow 10-ish-day hike to base camp. The point is to give the body time to gradually adjust to the lack of oxygen. “Hypoxic tents,” as they’re called, have been used by other endurance athletes for years.
‘Craziest thing you can do’: Why are so many adventure seekers warming up to ice climbing?
Democrats waved Ukrainian flags in the chamber as the vote took place and erupted with applause on passage, drawing a scolding from the chair for not maintaining decorum. Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer, D-N.Y., said a final vote could occur as soon as Tuesday, which would deliver it to Biden’s desk for his signature. Still, he gets poetic when he describes why so many clients are drawn to the world’s tallest summit. Many of the treks present more interesting technical challenges than Everest. Almost all of them feel like wild outposts compared with the circus vibe on Everest’s south side.

Greene, who is backing a motion to oust the speaker, gave voice during Saturday’s floor debate to the populist and isolationist strain in the GOP. The $8.1 billion Indo-Pacific bill, meanwhile, would include nearly $4 billion in security assistance to Taiwan and other regional allies, along with $1.9 billion to replenish U.S. stocks that have been reduced to help Asian allies, plus $3.3 billion for submarine infrastructure and more. One amendment adopted during debate would express support for ensuring security assistance in the bill gets to the Philippines. Six months after President Joe Biden first asked for it, the House passed a tweaked version of his emergency aid package for key U.S. allies with strong bipartisan support, sending it back to the Senate for a final vote. The traditional method starts in Kathmandu, at nearly 5,000 feet, where climbers spend a few days getting over jet lag.

"Since we have our own unique cultural heritage, including our language [and] our script, these matters four material and social development) should be in the hands of Tibetans.... With this present arrangement, whether intentionally or unintentionally, some kind of cultural genocide is taking place." In six seasons climbing the southern route, from 2009 to 2014, Ballinger said he passed through the Khumbu 38 times and had two close calls. While nobody on his teams lost their lives there, he helped recover the bodies of other climbers who had not been so lucky. As dangerous as it is for the mostly foreign climbers and guides, the odds are even worse for the local Sherpas, who regularly traverse the Khumbu ferrying equipment — tents, food, oxygen canisters — for the climbing teams.

Worse is the Khumbu Icefall, a glacier just above the southern base camp. It’s best known for wide spine-tingling crevasses spanned by flimsy-looking aluminum ladders lashed together with rope. Climbers have to walk across those ladders, wearing big boots and crampons, as they make multiple trips back and forth to advanced camps to acclimatize before finally heading for the summit.

It forms just below the summit on the southern route, at the last technical obstacle, a nearly vertical 40-foot rock wall called the Hillary Step. It’s on a ridge with a 10,000-foot drop to the climber’s right and an 8,000-foot drop to the left. So, when exhausted and inexperienced climbers inevitably struggle there, everybody else waits in a single file, hanging onto a fixed rope, while the bottled oxygen they need to survive at that altitude slowly drains away. Ballinger cuts nearly two weeks from his trips by driving his bedroom-acclimatized clients from the airport in Lhasa, Tibet, straight up to the northern route’s base camp, which is also at about 18,000 feet. At the heart of Tibet House US is the Lhakang Shrine, designed and by Tibetan artists, working with traditional methods and materials. Books, journals, magazines, newsletters, and audiovisual materials on many facets of Tibetan and Buddhist culture are available to the general public in the library.
Tibet House US was founded at the request of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, who at the inauguration in 1987 stated his wish for a long-term cultural institution to ensure the survival of Tibetan civilization and culture, whatever the political destiny of the six million people of Tibet itself. We’re excited to showcase our upcoming events and invite you to join us in exploring the richness and beauty of Tibetan culture and spirituality. Our events include gallery exhibitions, concerts, workshops, talks, and retreats, all designed to provide you with an immersive and transformative experience. The activities of this centre reach beyond the circle of Tibetologists and Buddhist Masters, it integrates laypersons as well as scholars of many disciplines, artists and social activists. The Tibet House was founded in 1965 by His Holiness the Dalai Lama to preserve and disseminate the unique cultural heritage of Tibet and to provide a centre for Tibetan and Buddhist studies. The most heated debate came over aid to Ukraine, with Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., allowing votes on three amendments to cut funding in that package, including the proposal from his chief GOP critic.
Tibet House US aims to promote and preserve Tibetan culture by serving as both a cultural center in New York City and a global resource for those interested in Tibetan civilization. The hidden heart of Asia, Tibet has served, during the last thousand years of the many imperial wars, as the safe treasury of Asia’s most sophisticated spiritual arts and sciences. Now, its precious Buddhist civilization of wisdom, compassion, peace and harmony is under a real threat of imminent extinction. That led to difficult conversations with spouses and partners about the necessity of sleeping at progressively higher simulated altitudes until they reached the height of Everest’s base camp, roughly 18,000 feet, where there’s about half the oxygen available at sea level. Another highlight of the night included Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit's "Only Children" that led into a greeting from longtime Tibet House Benefit Concert alumnus Iggy Pop. Tibet House US also operates the extraordinary Menla Mountain Retreat and Conference Center in the heart of the Catskill mountains, in Phoenicia, New York. “Menla” means “Medicine Buddha,” and the Center is being developed into a major transmitter of Tibetan Buddhist healing arts and sciences, Tibetan Medicine being one of the most precious offerings of the Tibetan culture to a world filled with suffering beings. The Israel package includes nearly $10 billion for developing or producing U.S. or Israeli-made weapons, including anti-missile and anti-rocket systems, as well as billions of dollars more to replenish U.S. stocks that have been drawn down to help Israel and to bankroll U.S. military operations in the region. In one key difference from the Senate-passed bill, over $9 billion in economic aid to Ukraine is structured as a loan, though the president could waive the repayment requirement unless Congress votes to block such waivers.
The bill would impose strict requirements on the State Department and U.S. Agency for International Development to certify that none of the humanitarian aid funds are diverted to Hamas. The bill also would prevent any of the money from being transferred to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency, where staffers have been accused of collaborating with Hamas in the Oct. 7 attacks on Israel. In the end, the four votes reflected bipartisan support for paying the price of continued U.S. engagement abroad, despite vocal misgivings about it from some on the right and others on the left. The $95.3 billion supplemental spending measure passed under an unusual procedure in which lawmakers voted on four separate bills that were then put together into one vehicle, replacing the text of a similar Senate-passed bill that came over from that chamber two months ago.
Established by theatrical producer Barbara Whitman in 2021, this award recognizes a woman, trans, or non-binary director who has developed a clear and distinctive artistic voice and demonstrated unique vision in their theatrical work. The virtual concert concluded with her famed anthem "People Have the Power," a longtime tradition which perfectly captured the empowering spirit of the evening. On the separate miscellaneous package of sanctions and other related measures, two amendments were adopted. “This bill will save hundreds of thousands, I believe millions of lives,” Sherman said.
Rep. Brad Sherman, D-Calif., a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee, countered that he received information from the Biden administration on its intent for that piece of the package, which is not specified in the text of the bill. The administration told Sherman that in addition to aiding Gazans, the money would also be distributed to assist with humanitarian crises in Haiti, Sudan, Ethiopia, Congo, Armenia and Myanmar. “Why would we knowingly be sending money into the hands of Hamas in any bill? A few critics came to the floor to discuss it however, such as Rep. Andrew Clyde, R-Ga., who took issue with the nearly $9.2 billion in humanitarian aid that he said would be delivered to Palestinians in Gaza.
